AF Series Submersible Sewage and Wastewater Pumps

Our AF Series is the core of our submersible sewage and wastewater pump lineup. These cast iron pumps are designed for municipal and industrial wastewater applications and are available with enclosed-channel, semi-open, or vortex-style impellers. These different impeller designs make it possible to match the pump more closely to the solids, flow conditions, and duty point of the system.

AF Series pumps use industrial-grade cable, air-filled motors, silicon carbide seals, and heavy-duty cast iron construction. An external oil lip seal helps prevent solids from accumulating around the mechanical seal faces, while epoxy-coated surfaces help protect the exterior of the pump during operation. Select models also incorporate anti-air-locking features.

The AF Series covers a particularly broad range of pumping requirements. Depending on the model, available options include:

  • Discharge sizes from 2 to 16 inches
  • Horsepower ratings from 0.5 to 75 HP
  • Solids-handling capacity from approximately 1.5 to 4 inches
  • Maximum heads up to 225 feet

AFC Series Cutter Pumps for Fibrous Sewage

Some sewage systems encounter wipes, fabric, sanitary products, thick paper, and other fibrous materials that can create recurring clogging problems. For these applications, our AFC Series submersible cutter pumps provide an additional level of debris reduction.

The AFC Series uses a tungsten-carbide-edged impeller designed to tear and break down destructible solids as they enter the pump. The semi-open impeller works against cutting surfaces in the casing cover, reducing fibrous material before it can obstruct the pump or downstream piping.

These cutter pumps feature high-grade cast iron construction, air-filled motors, silicon carbide mechanical seals, protected cable entry, and heat-hardened components in areas exposed to abrasion. Available models are designed for sewage and wastewater service, with horsepower ratings from 2 to 15 HP, maximum heads up to 180 feet, and maximum flows up to 650 GPM.

 

GF Series Grinder Pumps for Sewage Systems

When sewage needs to be reduced to a finer slurry before it enters a small-diameter force main or pressure sewer system, a grinder pump may be the better choice. Our GF Series submersible grinder pumps use a hardened radial cutter and cutter ring to grind and macerate solids before pumping the wastewater onward.

The GF Series incorporates a vortex impeller design that helps reduce clogging. The stainless steel cutting assembly is hardened for wear resistance, and the pumps are available in both single-phase and three-phase configurations. Select single-phase models use a centrifugal switch and internal capacitor motor design to provide increased starting torque, helping the cutting mechanism work through challenging material with less risk of jamming.

GF Series pumps are available with 1.25- or 2-inch discharges and horsepower ratings from 1 to 15 HP. The series covers residential wastewater and sewage applications while also providing models suitable for larger commercial, industrial, and municipal systems.

 

Choosing Between a Sewage Pump, Cutter Pump, and Grinder Pump

The best sewage pump depends on what the system needs the pump to do.

A traditional solids-handling sewage pump, such as an AF Series model, is often appropriate when the goal is to pass solids through the pump without reducing them to a fine consistency. These pumps are available with multiple impeller styles and can accommodate a wide range of flow and head requirements.

A cutter pump is useful when fibrous debris is a primary concern. Rather than fully grinding the sewage, the cutting mechanism tears and reduces materials that might otherwise wrap around the impeller or create blockages.

A grinder pump is designed to process solids into a much finer slurry. This can be especially useful in pressure sewer systems or applications using smaller-diameter discharge piping.

Effluent and wastewater pumps, including our F and FN Series, are also available for systems with smaller or more limited solids. These pumps serve different conditions than full solids-handling sewage pumps, so the liquid characteristics and expected solids size should always be considered before selecting a model.
